title Korea via stamps: 70th anniversary of independence
date 2015.08.31
Untitled Document

This year is the 70th anniversary of Korean independence from Japanese colonial rule, and Korea Post recently issued a range of commemorative stamps to mark the occasion.

The stamps contain images of Kim Gu, an independence activist, signatures from members of the Korean Liberation Army and the Taegeukgi, the national flag. Kim's photograph was taken at the time of Korean liberation in August 1945. Some 70 members of the liberation army signed the flag, wishing for freedom. Their messages contain the joy of liberation, hope for complete independence and love of their country, covering the entire flag.

Commemorative stamps mark the 70th anniversary of Korean independence. They contain images of Kim Gu and of a famous Taegeukgi signed by members of the Korean Liberation Army.

Commemorative stamps mark the 70th anniversary of Korean independence. They contain images of Kim Gu and of a famous Taegeukgi signed by members of the Korean Liberation Army.

The stamps were designed under the theme of "A Great Journey" and symbolize "A New Leap Forward."

"A Great Journey" refers to modern Korean economic development and the growth of democracy in the aftermath of the Korean War (1950-1953). "A New Leap Forward" symbolizes the wish for Korea to become a fully developed society and to achieve reunification.
