Detail
`Korea`s first national performing art centre was founded approximately 1,600 years ago during the Koguryo dynasty. The centre was in full bloom during the reign of King Sejong of the Chosun dynasty when it was in charge of five art instituitions with some 1,700 performing artists.
Korean Traditional Performing Art Centre (KTPAC), a modern version of the national performing art centre, was opened on April 10, 1951 in Pusan, which was the provisional capital of Korea during the Korean War. Since 1973 when the National Theater was built in Jangchoong-dong, Seoul, KTPAC had leased the building for its performances. However, now with its own theater which was built in Seocho-dong, Seoul, in 1987. KTPAC attempts to restore its heyday through the promotion of traditional performing art. KTPAC`s performance, education, and research in traditional performing art are parts of such endeavor. Currently, KTPAC runs a rather small-sized theater for its performances however, a large auditorium, designed to hold 1000seats, is under construction. For the 40th anniversary, KTPAC is hosting a pan-korean traditinal performing art festival with casts from its own troupe of musicians and dancers as well as non-member artists in the traditional performing art field.
The Mnistry of Communications issues this postage stamp to raise the people`s awareness of KTPAC`s role as a place where people can enjoy traditional performing art where excellence of our tradition will be widely spread through international exchanges where the citizens can relax while enjoying its cultural activities.`
