Detail
`The Winter Universiade is a sports festival for collegians and university students from all over the world. This year, it will be held from January 24 to February 2, 1997, in Muju and Chonju, North Cholla Province. The Universiade is being held to promote world peace and love for humanity as well as to encourage harmonization between academic spirit and sportsmanship. It is expected that the Universiade will inspire collegians and university students, the pillars of future society, to forge friendships and to build character, a cooperative spirit, and the ability to adapt, thereby achieving their full potential in the true spirit of amateurism. This upcoming 18th Winter Universiade will be the second universiade to be held in Asia. The 15th Winter Universiade was held in Sapporo, Japan in 1991. In the Muju-Chonju Winter Universiade, more than 2,600 athletes from some 50 countries will compete in numerous events. The indoor events including figure skating, short-track, speed skating, and ice hockey will be staged in fully modernized indoor skating rinks in Chonju, while the outdoor events including alpine skating, nordic skiing, and the biathlon will be staged at the world-class ski courses, and facilities in Muju, offering spectators the best of winter sports. More than 2,700 volunteers, and backup personnel from home and abroad have been hard at work together, and will do their utmost to make the University Games big success. Orderliness and hospitality will be the rules of the day at the Universiade. It will no doubt be a festive and harmonious occasion that once again brings the world together. The Ministry of Information and Communication is commemorating the Universiade by issuing two new commemorative stamps featuring ``a dashing skier`` and ``a figure skater``, both of which were illustrated by the artist Kim, Ok-nam and designed by the designer Kim, Hyun.`
