Detail
Every four years Cup fever grips our global village. World Cup soccer sends soccer fans around the world cheering at the stadium or rushing home from work to watch TV broadcasts of matches, However vital they may be, no political or economic issues can capture people`s hearts and make them unite like a World Cup soccer match. World Cup soccer has gained worldwide fame and is now a global festival. The origins of soccer date back to ancient Greece where a game with elements of soccer, episkuros or harpaston, was played. It migrated to Rome as harpastum by the second century B.C. Roman legions may have introduced the game throughout Europe during the Roman occupation (43/44-410 A.D.). In Korea, ch`ukkuk, a soccer-like game, was played from the Three Kingdoms period to the late Chosun dynasty. The game is said to have originated in ancient China where the legendary Emperor Hwang used it to drill soldiers. Jules Rimet, the founder of the World Cup, lauched the World Cup into a global affair during his presidency of FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) from 1920 to 1956. The FIFA named the World Cup trophy awarded to the winner of the soccer championship the Jules Rimet Cup in memory of his extraordinary contributions. The original cup was permanently presented to three-time winner Brazil at the ninth Mexico World Cup (1970) and FIFA had a new trophy made for the tenth World Cup Games held in ? Germany(1974). Hoping for the successful co-hosting of the 2002 World Cup Soccer Championship Series by Korea and Japan, the Ministry of Information and Communication is issuing two commemorative stamps and two souvenir sheets featuringPainting of ch`ukkuk matchdesigned by Professor Lee, Chul-joo andJules Rimet , the founder of the World Cup. These are in addition to the stamps issued in 1996 which celebrated FIFA`s decision to award Korea and Japan the right to co-host the 2002 World Cup Games.
