`The Ministry of Information and Communication has been issuing stamps featuring wild flowers of Korea in order to publicize the beauty of Korean wild flowers and, more importantly, to raise public awareness of the need to protect them. The eighth collection of the wild flower series now being issued features Belamcanda chinensis (LINNE) DC., Hylomecon vernale MAX., Campanula taksimana NAKAI, and Magnolia sieboldil K. KOCH.
Belamcanda chinensis (LINNE) DC.
This perennaial herb of the iris family is found mountains and along sea shores. It is inJuly and August with yellowish-red flowing leopard-spotted with dark red. The 30∼50 cm long and 2∼4 cm wide leaves are level and arranged evenly like a fan ribs and they are of a shade of green with a touch of white. They come to a point at the tips and hug each other at a sheathing base. Belamcanda chinensis (LINNE) DC. is distributed in Korea, Japan, and China.
Hylomecon vernale MAX.
This flowering perennial plant grows in mountain forests. It grows up to 30m in height and secretes yellowish brown milky juice when cut. The flowers, which bloom in April and May, are about 3∼4 cm in diameter and are deep yellow in color. Each flower has four petals about 2 cm long. This herb usually grows in woods in north-central Korea and in Manchuria, China, along the Amur and Ussuri rivers. The whole body has medicinal value and is also occasionally edible as a spring salad green though it can be harmful if consumed in large quantities.
Campanula taksimana NAKAI,
This perennial herb of the bellflower family grows only on Ullungdo island. It is found in grasslands along the shore line. It bears 3∼5 cm long light purple flowers with deep splotches which droop from the stem and branches. White flower with deep splotches are called ````white is ? bellflowers```` and light purple flowers with is. splotches are called ``purple island bellfolwers``.
Magnolia sieboldii K.KOCH
This deciduous small tree is found in forests in mountain valleys. It usually grows 7m high and bears flowers in May and June after the leaves bud. The drooping white flowers are 7∼10 cm in diameter, generally have six to nine oval petals, and give off pleasant fragrance. It is distributed in Korea, Japan, and Manchuria. Varieties with spotted leaves are called ``mottled magnolias``, and varieties with more than 12 petals are called ``overlapping magnolias``.`
