`The `97 Kwangju Binnale will be hosted by the City of Kwangju, which has long since earned fame as an artistic hometown for its unique culture and artistic flavor. The `biennale` means a biennial international art exhibition. Among the most famous biennales around the world are the Venice Biennale, Sao Paule Biennale, Whitney Biennale, ? Documenta Biennale, and Biennale de Lyon. Each in itself is a truly unique experience. The first Kwangju Biennale was held in 1995, and it was an immense success, attracting more than 1,640,000 visitors. The `97 Kwangju Biennale will be held for 88 days from September 1 to November 27. 108 artists from 39 countries including 12 Korean artists and 11 teams will display their artworks under the main theme of `Unmapping the Earth`. The sub-theme of are speed, space, hybrid, power, and becoming. In addition to the main exhibitions, five special exhibitions including `Memory and History` and `Nomadic Passages` will be held, and various art performances by art companies from or five times a day during the `97 Kwangju Biennale. In issuing this commemorative stamp, ? Ministry of Information and Communication hopes that the `97 Kwangju Biennale will increase awareness and appreciation of fine art and boost Korea`s image abroad as a cultural center. The stamp design was the most-excellent prize winner in a stamp design contest. It is a clever composition representing a human face using the Biennale logo and the figure `9, 7`. Come and join in the `Unmapping of the Earth` during the `97 Kwangju Biennale.
