Detail
This is the 40th year since Korea has formed diplomatic relations with Sri Lanka, a gateway for trade between the East and the West, the home of the internationally celebrated Ceylon tea and the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean.” Located at the southern end of India, Sri Lanka is one-third the size of the Korean Peninsula. It is a multicultural and multilingual country where a number of minority ethnic groups live in harmony centering on the Sinhalese and the Tamil, which account for 75% and 15% of the country’s population respectively. Since the civil war ended in 2009, Sri Lanka has been displaying a trend of steady growth by enjoying prolonged political stability. The relationship between Sri Lanka and Korea began in earnest when Korea opened the Office of Sri Lanka Trade Representative in Colombo in 1972 and diplomatic ties were established officially in 1977. Since then, the two countries have been maintaining a friendly relationship in various fields. Recently, government-level exchange between high-ranking officials and exchange in the private sector have been further activated. Korea, in particular, is transferring its experiences of economic growth and agricultural technologies to Sri Lanka. As such, Korea has been expanding cooperative development projects with Sri Lanka. Korea Post is issuing commemorative stamps to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Korea - Sri Lanka diplomatic relations under the theme of court dances, which showcases the magnificent traditional cultures of the two countries. Chunaengjeon (Dance of the Spring Nightingale) of Korea was created during the period of rule by King Sunjo to celebrate the 40th birthday of Queen Sunwon. It is a solo dance depicting the movements of a nightingale. A dancer dressed in a colorful costume displays elegant and beautiful dancing movements on Hwamunseok, a floral-patterned straw mat. Sri Lankas Kandyan Dance encompasses folk dances of various regions in the country and the dance performed at royal banquets during the period of the Kingdom of Kandy. Dancers in splendid costumes dance with energetic yet subtle movements to the rhythm of the drum beats.
