Detail
The global winter festival, PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games, will be holding the opening ceremony for the colorful 17-day event on February 9, 2018. Korea Post is issuing a commemorative stamp that celebrates the arrival of the Torch to mark the flamboyant opening of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games, as well as commemorative medals that attest to the hard work put in by all of the athletes striving to win.
The PyeongChang 2018 Flame Torch was made into 700mm length to represent the altitude of Pyeongchang with the motif from white color that represents snow and ice, and the flowing curve of the traditional Korean white porcelain. The shape of the flame that divides into five parts represents the five continents. When the torch is lit, the gold part looks like one big flame. The PyeongChang 2018 Flame Torch was lit in Olympia, Greece on October 24, 2017 and arrived at the Incheon International Airport on November 1 after it journeyed across Greece for a week. Under the slogan of ‘Let Everyone Shine’, this torch shined attractions in Korea with a glorious history of a five thousand years as it toured around 17 cities and provinces as well as 18 cities and counties in Gangwon-do by the hands of 7,500 people for 101 days.
The 2018 PyeongChang medals were inspired by Hangul (Korean writing) and Hanbok (Korean traditional clothing), the symbols of our people. The Olympics rings are carved on the front at the top, and the emblem and event are carved on the back. The oblique lines on the front and back are created using three-dimensional versions of the consonants contained in the Korean written expression for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games (평창동계올림픽이공일팔) written in Korean, which are ㅍ,ㅊ,ㄷ,ㄱ,ㅇ, and ㄹ, engraved on the side. The medal strap was created using Gapsa, a traditional Korean fabric used for Hanbok, with the same consonants that make up the medals themselves embroidered in snowflake patterns.
Korea Post supports the successful opening of the PyeongChang 2018 through this stamp, and we hope that this event will be remembered as a global winter festival achieved through undying passion, hard work, and dedication, as reflected in the Torch and medals.
