Detail
The Korea Post released a stamp in commemoration of the
100th anniversary of the University of Seoul, embracing the
city s past and present amid keeping faithful to tradition.
The University of Seoul has steadily evolved over the last
100 years falling in sync with the generational changes
from that of an agrarian society to an industrialized one in
order to educate youth into becoming productive members
of society. After starting off as the Kyung Sung Public
Agricultural College in 1918, it gradually evolved through
the years to become the Seoul Agricultural College in 1946,
soon to grow into the leading agricultural school ten years
later in 1956, meeting the need for a talented workforce
within the thriving agriculture industry. In 1974, it was
then transformed into the Seoul Industrial University to
satisfy the high demand for talent needed within the fields
of urban construction and administration. Following the
1981 rechristening as University of Seoul today s current
name, the school became a full-fledged university, growing
into that of the representative school of Seoul. As the
only public university under the management of the city
government, the University of Seoul implemented the
country’s first-ever half-off tuition initiative, putting the
university at the forefront of the movement to normalize
public education while actively partaking in a number
of social contribution projects to initiate societal change,
demonstrating the responsibilities of a model university.
In line with this year s vision, The pride of Seoul, 100 years
of learning and sharing,” university members and citizens
of Seoul are planned to collaborate for several centennial
commemorative projects. A variety of commemorative
projects were conducted, including the Together With Seoul
Program and the Global Program, both having stemmed
from the vision proclamation ceremony, while the 100-year
anniversary memorial hall, coined the “Civic Cultural
Education Center,” opened its doors to promote the sharing
of knowledge and culture with the local communities to
establish a stronger connection with the people.
The Kyongnong Hall, introduced on the recently released
commemorative stamp, is an architecture maintaining a rich
history since 1937 while also symbolizing the long history of
the University of Seoul, resulting in its selection as a future
heritage landmark of the city. As an educational institution
that has stood firmly upon educational values and the
fostering of exceptional talent throughout its centennial
history, we look onward to the next 100 years of the same
exemplary leadership the university has demonstrated.
