Detail
The Republic of Koreas elections, that first started on May 10, 1948 with the first legislative elections, is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. Over the last 70 years the ROK has seen 19 presidential elections, 20 legislative elections, 6 nationwide simultaneous local elections and numerous referendums, local elections and by elections. The Korean peoples devotion and passion for democracy is deeply engraved in the countrys 70-year-old history of voting. The voting culture still managed to evolve despite Koreas turbulent history. The right to vote widely expanded, guaranteeing every single citizen an equal and fair opportunity. Early, overseas and shipboard voting were all adopted to broaden the people`s suffrage rights to promote a more optimized voting culture. Additionally, the environment surrounding elections also became both fairer and more accurate. Democracy flourished thanks to these elections, consequently creating a path for the Republic of Korea to become the internationally-recognized democratic state it is today. Elections are strictly and fairly managed by the National Election Commission (NEC), an independent constitutional body. The NEC, established in 1963, does not only take care of elections for public official elections, national referendums, resident referendums and recall votes, but also operates elections closer to the peoples everyday life such as that of political party representatives, union presidents and neighborhood representatives. It also provides democratic civic education in order to support the development of a sound political party system. These efforts are serving as a means for the NEC to push for the development of South Koreas democracy, giving life to both a beautiful voting and transparent political culture. May 10th, South Koreas first voting day and the birth of its democracy, is now known as Voter`s Day. This is a meaningful day on which citizens are reminded of the importance of voting and their rights and duties toward it. A voter and a person with the desire of good politics that meet through elections have the power to make for a brighter Republic of Korea. Lets hope for a beautiful voting culture that flourishes so that the people may freely participate in elections while communicating and relating with one another while the candidates compete fairly through policies and commitments.
