Detail
`The Red Cross need no introduction that it has served mankind for 100 years. Its humanitarian task has been conducted in peace and war by unselfish, dedicated men and women. Millions of people have benefited from the Red Cross and are benefiting from it every day. The Red Cross consists of the International Committee of the Red Cross, the League of Red Cross Societies and its National Red Cross of the member nations.
The Red Cross has made a great contribution for a century in order to alleviate the sufferings of mankind without distinction as to race, religion and politics throughout the world and now it has ninety regular member nations. There are only few nations that have no Red Cross.
The Red Cross, which is devoting its unselfish efforts to prevent the sufferings of mankind and carry out the necessary social relief works in that field, was founded 100 years ago by the Swiss humanitarian Jean Henri Dunant who consistently dedicated himself to realize the organization based on the burning love for humanity. In October 26, 1863, 26 representatives from 14 nations met in an international conference for the foundation of the organization at Geneva and they signed the Geneva Convention in the following year at Geneva, thus the organization was formally established.
1963 is, therefore, the Red Cross Centenary and vast commemorative programs for the Centenary are to be undertaken by all the member countries throughout the world, under the centenary slogans of the ``World Brotherhood through Red Cross Action`` and others.
On the occasion of the Centenary of Red Cross, the Ministry of Communications will issue commemorative stamp on May 8, the Red Cross day as well as the birthday of Jean Henri Dunant, with the Red Cross Centenary emblem and world map as its design.`
