To mark this occasion various colourful events are carried out each year through the joint auspice of Editors Association, Korean Journalist Association, Korean Newspaper Publishers Association, and Korean Press Association. The newspaper maintains an inseparable relation with our daily life and it is a true leader and companion of our society in that it watches the world, speaks for us the right and wrong, keeps us informed of what goes on around us, leading us into a new cultural world. The newspaper as such was first published in Korea in the name of ``Independence Daily`` on April 7, 1896. Ever since, it served the Korean people as a pioneer in the struggle for the freedom and independence of Korea by advocating the folk spirit among the people, inspite of Japanese oppression during the period of 36 years of its rule in the country. The newspapers likewise, have always stood by the people to give us a source of strength in weakness, comfort in sorrow, and it guided us to safety at times of danger. Since the liberation, the newspaper has made remarkable progress under the freedom of speech assured by the Constitution and today there are more than 100 dail and weekly newspapers in the country. They have reached to international standard not only in terms of quantity but also in quality. Korea was admitted as a member into International Press Institute in 1959. The Korean newspapers today are ever more contributing to the development in fields of pplitics, economy, social affairs, culture, and ideas. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of Korean Newspapers Day, the Ministry of Communications will issue 7 Won postage stamp wishing for its continued prosperity.`
