`The UNESCO will celebrate its 20th anniversary on November 4, 1966. Established in November 4, 1946, as an agency of the United Nations, it aims to promote collaborations among nations through education, science and culture in order to further human rights and freedom without distinction of the race, sex, or religion.
First, to further the progress of the human, community, the UNESCO undertakes programs for the collection and exchanges of informations, cooperations with the United Nations and its professional organizations, promotion of human rights, international cooperation, grant of scholarships and exploration of natural resources.
Secondly, to help solve the inherent regional problems, it supports and encourages the enforcement of compulsory education, adult and vocational trainings, while exerting efforts to ease the racial and social tensions in any country and to prompt the mutual understanding and exchange between the western and the orental civilization.
The UNESCO, now with its headquarters in Paris, is consisting of general assembly, executive committee and secretariat office. A national committee has been set up in each 120 individual countries throughout the world.
Korea affiliated itself with the agency on June 14, 1950. The Korean National committee for the UNESCO was formally founded on July 6, 1953 to promote the purposes and the programs of the UNESCO at home and to assist the Government with the agency`s professional recommendation and advice on the fields of education, science and culture.
The U.N. agency is also engaged in wide-ranging programs such as collection of informations, surveys, researchs and exchange of informations obtained there from seminars, public lectures exhibitions, grants of assistance, publication and exchange of personal visits and oversea training of Korean scholars.
The Korean National Committee for the UNESCO has its local chapters in the major cities of the country to carry on the UNESCO program in a nationwide scope, and a Student UNESCO association is set up in each university.
The Ministry of Communications will issue a commemorative stamp to congratulate on the occasion on 20th anniversary of the UNESCO wishing that the agency further contribute to the progress of the human culture and to the world peace.`
