Detail
2024 is the year of Gapjin, or blue dragon, as the 41st year in the sexagenary cycle. The dragon, symbolizing magical abilities and bravery, is the only imaginary animal among the 12-year cycle of animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac. Also, as one of the Four Guardians (also referred to as the Four Gods or the Four Auspicious Beasts), the dragon symbolizes the east; the phoenix, the south; the tiger, the west; and the turtle, the north. In celebration of the Year of the Dragon, Korea Post is issuing the annual stamp series New Year’s Greetings with the theme of the dragon, a symbol of courage and hope. br br Since ancient times, the dragon has been considered an auspicious and majestic animal, and has been likened to admirable and honorable persons, such as the king. To emphasize the dignity and majesty of royal family, robes worn by the king while performing his official duties were adorned with dragon embroidery. It is also known as one of the Four Guardians that protects the east. Blue dragons were painted on the murals of ancient tombs of Goguryeo and Baekje, as well as the ceiling of the east gate of the royal palace in the Joseon dynasty. Given the historical evidence, our ancestors used versatile dragon images on architecture, craftworks, paintings, and costumes, thereby wanting to stay close its divine power. In addition, people held a ritual for rain to the blue dragon symbolizing prosperity and abundance. br br The New Year`s Greetings stamps features a soaring dragon against the backdrop of blue sky, boasting its dignity and spirit portrayed through its face. We hope this commemorative stamp series serves as an opportunity to start the new year with the spirit of the blue dragon. May your 2024 be a year of positive change and success. br
