Detail
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Park Whamok a prominent figure in South Korean children`s literature and a poet. Park Whamok is renowned for composing the lyrics of the well-known Korean representative song `Barley Field,` based on his poem `Old Thoughts,` and the lyrics of the song `Fruit Garden Way` set to music. His lyrically profound works continue to evoke poignant and warm memories for many. br br Park Whamok (pen name: Park Eunjong) was born on February 15, 1924, in Haeju, Hwanghae-do. Displaying literary talent and musical aptitude from a young age, he later graduated from the Department of Arts at Pyongyang Theological Seminary. After moving to Manchuria, he graduated from Harbin English Academy and Bongcheon Dongbuk Theological Seminary. In 1941, he debuted by publishing simultaneous poems such as `Pyramid` and `Winter Night` in the children`s magazine `Child Life.` Grounded in Christian faith, he primarily wrote poetry and, since 1948, also took an interest in fairy tale creation. He published poetry collections such as `Poet and Mountain Goat,` `In My Heart,` and simultaneous poetry collections like `Lantern Light` and `Butterfly Turning into Flower Petals,` expressing the struggles and yearnings of displaced people in many works, juxtaposed with the natural environment of their hometown. After winning the Hanjeong Dongmun Literary Award in 1972 with the poem `Spring Night,` he went on to receive the Seoul City Culture Award, the Literature Award of Korea, the Christian Literature Award, and the Okgwan Order of Cultural Merit. br br Having left for Busan in 1951 during the Korean War, Park Whamok, recalling the barley fields of his hometown in Hwanghae Province, wrote the poem `Old Thoughts.` Yun Yong-ha set it to music, completing the Korean representative song `Barley Field.` Additionally, the poignant and nostalgic `Fruit Garden Way,` with its beautiful and delicate expressions, can be considered one of Park Whamok`s masterpieces, evoking dreams of childhood and yearning for the hometown in our hearts. br br This commemorative postage stamp features an image of Park Whamok gazing at the hometown orchard with acacia flowers fluttering around. We hope you take this opportunity to reflect on Park Whamok`s literary spirit, encapsulated in the form of simultaneous poetry, and the enduring value of children`s literature. br
