June 5 of every year is observed globally as World Environment Day, a time for the international community to reflect on the importance of environmental conservation and to participate together in its efforts. This commemorative day was established in 1972 during the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm, Sweden, and has since grown into the world’s largest environmental event. Each year, the official ceremony brings together key figures from various countries, representatives of international organizations, numerous businesses, and civil society leaders from around the globe, all reaffirming their joint commitment to addressing environmental issues. br br Korea also demonstrated its international commitment to environmental protection by successfully hosting the 28th World Environment Day ceremony in Seoul on June 5, 1997. Now, 28 years later, this meaningful global event will once again be held in Korea in 2025. The upcoming ceremony, set to take place in Jeju, will be themed “Ending Plastic Pollution.” It aims to foster a global consensus on the severity of plastic-related issues and reinforce shared determination toward solving the problem. br br The 2025 World Environment Day commemorative stamp vividly contrasts the serene and pristine beauty of nature, reimagined through a modern interpretation of traditional Korean landscape painting, with the stark reality of an environment suffering under the weight of plastic pollution.
