Detail
Jeju Island was formed through volcanic activity, with numerous volcanic cones of various sizes distributed across the island surrounding Mount Hallasan. Among these, the small volcanic cones are called oreums, and there are more than 360 of them throughout Jeju. Oreums are a unique geological formation found only on Jeju, serving as an important element of the island’s natural landscape and a valuable resource for ecotourism. Furthermore, oreums have long been closely connected with the lives of local residents, serving as guiding points and resting places near their villages. Korea Post is introducing Jimibong and Baekyaki Oreum Volcanic Cone through commemorative stamps to showcase these natural wonders and the characteristics of Jeju`s volcanic terrain. br br Jimibong is an oreum located in Jongdal-ri, Gujwa-eup, Jeju-si, characterized by its horseshoe-shaped crater. Standing at approximately 165.8 meters above sea level, the summit offers a panoramic view of Seongsan Ilchulbong Tuff Cone, Udo Island, Jongdalhang Port, and the waters off the coast of Jongdal-ri. As part of Jeju Olle Trail Route 21, it draws a steady flow of visitors. Remains of a beacon mound can be found at the summit, and Jimi Beacon Mound is said to have exchanged signals with Wangga Beacon Mound to the northwest and Seongsan Beacon Mound to the southeast. br br Located in Seongeup-ri, Pyoseon-myeon, Seogwipo-si, Baekyaki Oreum Volcanic Cone features a wide and deep circular crater at its center. While visitors can walk along the rim of the crater, access to certain sections of the summit ridge has been restricted since August 2020. Though its elevation is relatively high at 356.9 meters, its gentle slopes make it a popular destination for families. Since ancient times, the area has been known for the abundant growth of medicinal herbs, which is why it is called Baekyaki Oreum. In Hanja (Chinese characters), it is referred to as Baekyakak or Baekyaksan. Various medicinal plants, such as bokbunja (Korean black raspberry), small-flower Asian calamint, and shiny mint, grow around the oreum, clearly reflecting the origin of its name and its natural characteristics. Walking along the ridge, one can take in Jeju’s distinctive landscape at a glance, with Seongsan Ilchulbong Tuff Cone and Udo Island to the east, and Mount Hallasan and clusters of oreum to the west. br br
