Detail
World Maritime Day br br
World Maritime Day was established in 1978 by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, and is observed annually on the last Thursday of September to recognize the contribution of the international maritime industry to the global economy. It is a meaningful day for the international community to reflect on the importance of maritime safety, the protection of the marine environment, and the essential role of shipping in sustaining international trade, and this commemorative stamp is being issued to mark the occasion. br br
As a leading maritime and shipbuilding nation, the Republic of Korea was selected as a co-host country for the 2026 World Maritime Day Parallel Event. Each year, IMO observes a theme reflecting current issues facing the maritime sector. Under the 2026 theme, “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence,” representatives of IMO Member States and other distinguished guests will gather at the event to discuss the implementation of IMO conventions and strategies for the future. The event will take place in Busan from October 26 to 27, followed by Korea Maritime Week from October 28 to 29.
The commemorative stamp features a scenic view of Busan Port, with the IMO emblem and the Taegeukgi displayed side by side. Together, these elements represent the Republic of Korea’s prominent role in advancing the global maritime order and its strong commitment to international cooperation and solidarity. br br
The sea connects people and nations, serving as a vital space for communication and cooperation. May this commemorative stamp serve as a lasting reminder of the value of the sea, which sustains our daily lives and economies, and of our shared commitment to building a safer and more sustainable maritime future.
