Detail
Seventy percent of Korea s land is made up of mountains and thus,
there are many national parks here with beautiful mountains ridges and
magnificent scenery. As the fourth bundle of travel destinations that
Koreans must visit, we would like to introduce you to Korea s beautiful
mountainous national parks.
Juwangsan National Park is a national park with Juwangsan Mountain
(720m), which spreads across Cheongsong County and Yeongdeok County
in North Gyeongsang Province, as its center. Juwangsan Mountain is one
of the top three rocky mountains in Korea, which also include Seoraksan
Mountain and Wolchulsan Mountain. At the entrance of the mountain trail
there is a towering, peculiar and marvelous rock face that spreads out like
a f olding s creen and i s als o k nown as ‘Seok byeongsan Mount ain.
Starting with Juwangsan s majestic but aesthetic Yongchu Falls, Jeolgu
Falls and Yongyeon Falls, visitors can appreciate Woroe Falls and Dalgi
Falls together with Jeolgol Valley, which holds the mystery of original
nature, and unexplored regions illustrated by 300-year-old red leaf willows
and Jusanji Pond. Juwangsan s geological features are diverse and unique,
and it was registered as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2017.
Taebaeksan National Park is a national park with Taebaeksan Mountain
(1,567m) in Taebaek and Yeongwol County of Gangwon Province and
Bonghwa County of North Gyeongsang Province as its center. Taebaeksan
Mountain was considered the sacred mountain of the people from ancient
times and sits in the center of the Baekdudaegan Mountain Range.
Taebaeksan Mountain is a magnificent national park with snow-covered
pinus koraiensis in winter and royal azalea and autumn foliage in the
spring and fall. At the mountain peak there is the Cheonjedan Altar where
people once performed heavenly rituals, and the mountain is well-known
for the Monument to the Dan Jong, a monument house of the king of
Joseon, and Yongjeong, a well that is situated at 1,470m above sea level.
This region is comprised of the Geomnyongso Spring, the source of the
Hangang River, and Baekcheon Valley, the world’s southernmost habitat
of the Manchurian trout. It possesses various and excellent cultural/
ecological scenic resources.
Mudeungsan National Park is a national park located in the vicinity
of Mudeungsan Mountain (1,187m) in Dong District and Buk District in
Gwangju Metropolitan City, Hwasun County and the border of Damyang
County in South Jeolla Province. Mudeungsan Mountain is known as the
guardian mountain of the Honam area. At the peak of the mountain
there is Cheonwangbong Peak with grand columnar joints magnificently
spread throughout the area, and among them, Ipseokdae Rock Columns,
Seoseokdae Rockface and Gwangseokdae Colonnade are known as the
Three Rock Sceneries of Mudeungsan Mountain. There are also traditional
Buddhist temples including Jeungsimsa temple and Wonhyosa temple as
well as the Hwanbyeokdang Pavilion, Sigyeongjeong Pavilion and the
Soswaewon Garden with their flowering Gasa literature and tower/pavilion
culture. Mudeungsan Mountain was also registered as a UNESCO Global
Geopark in 2018 and acknowledged for its geological value.
Bukhansan National Park is a national park with Bukhansan Mountain
(873m), which is spread across the northern region of Seoul and areas
of Gyeonggi Province, as its center. Bukhansan Mountain endured long
years of weathering to form a beautiful valley that now stands between its
gigantic granite peaks. Around the highest peak, Baegundae Peak, there
is the well-known Mangyeongdae Overlook, Nojeokbong Peak, Uidong
Valley and Segeomjeong Valley. The site also contains cultural relics
including Bukhansanseong Fortress and the monuments commemorating
King Jinheung s tour as well as numerous Buddhist temples and hermitages
including Doseonsa, which was founded by Doseon Guksa, and Taegosa.
Bukhansan Mountain is a globally rare site, a national park located within
a city. There is also a trail along the mountain allowing visitors to walk
along the skirts of the gentle Bukhansan Mountain while gaining natural,
historical and cultural experiences.
