Detail
Located in the northern part of Gyeongsangbuk-do, Andong is a riverside city where the Nakdong River flows through the heart of the urban area, much like the Han River in Seoul. It is the largest city by area among all cities in the country. Known as the ‘museum without a roof,’ Andong is rich in cultural heritage from various eras, boasting three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, one UNESCO Memory of the World Register, and one Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Additionally, the city has strengths in promoting tourism based on Confucian cultural resources, which led to its selection as a regional tourism hub in 2020. Hahoe Village stands as a representative cultural heritage site of Andong, where traditional buildings such as old houses, Confucian academies, pavilions, and political affairs harmoniously coexist. This architectural ensemble, along with the preservation of intangible heritage like seasonal customs and rites of passage, earned Hahoe Village recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. The name Hahoe means ‘the water turns’, reflecting the S-shaped curve of the Nakdong River as it wraps around the village. The village`s unique shape is said to resemble a lotus flower, which is why Buyongdae Cliff, a viewpoint overlooking Hahoe Village, is named to signify ‘a vantage point for viewing lotus flowers.’ Wolyeonggyo Bridge, measuring 387 meters in length and 3.6 meters in width, is the longest wooden bridge in South Korea and a perfect spot for leisurely strolls while taking in the beautiful surroundings of Andong. The views from the bridge change dramatically with the seasons, each offering its unique charm. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom along the lakeside and mountainsides, while summer brings lush greenery to the forests. Autumn showcases a stunning display of colorful foliage, and in winter, visitors can admire the snow gracefully falling over the lake. At night, true to its name ‘Wolyeong’ (meaning ‘moon reflection’), the sight of the moon reflecting on the river is particularly enchanting. The bridge features Wolyeongjeong Pavilion in the middle and is lined with lights, making it a popular destination for enjoying night views.
