This year marks the 50th anniversary of Robot Taekwon V, one of South Korea`s most iconic animated films. Since its premiere in 1976, it has broken new ground for Korean animation and, over the past five decades, has remained a heroic figure in the hearts of countless fans. Its enduring popularity has allowed it to transcend generations and secure its place as a treasured part of Korea`s cultural content. After drawing record audiences when it first opened in 1976, Robot Taekwon V expanded into a successful film series with Robot Taekwon V Part 2: Space Operation (1976), Robot Taekwon V Part 3: Underwater Special Forces (1977), Super Taekwon V (1982), and 84 Taekwon V (1984). These productions helped usher in a flourishing period for Korean animation. As one of the industry`s earliest landmark achievements, the series played an essential role in establishing the foundations of Korea`s animation sector at a time when the field was still in its infancy. Through continual reinvention, Robot Taekwon V has grown into a lasting symbol of Korean culture. Following extensive film restoration efforts in the 2000s, the original feature returned to theaters in 2007 in a digitally restored edition, introducing the classic once again to audiences across generations. The commemorative stamp issue brings together familiar characters, including Hooni, Yeonghee, Dr. Kim, Dr. Yoon, and Kkangtongcheoli, and presents the many different appearances of Robot Taekwon V from its earliest days to the present. The stamps are produced in the form of traditional round ddakji (paper game tile) game pieces, recalling a favorite childhood pastime while adding to their appeal as collectibles. For the older generations, the design reawakens memories of playing with friends in neighborhood alleyways, while younger generations and children can discover a nostalgic aspect of Korea`s past through a fresh and engaging format. We hope that this commemorative stamp issue will encourage people to look back on the 50-year history of Robot Taekwon V, share the memories it has created, and celebrate it as a cultural icon that continues to connect people across generations.
