Detail
The 2013 PyeongChang World Winter Special Olympics Games, the global sporting event for athletes with intellectual disabilities, will be held in Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province, for 5 days from Jan. 29 to Feb. 5, 2013. Participated by those with intellectual and autismrelated disabilities, unlike the Paralympics for those with physical disabilities, the Special Olympics is literally a special Olympics where in lieu of the participants’ performance in the competition, their spirit of challenge itself is emphasized, and interest in and support for their social participation and rehabilitation are shared among the international society. Prompted by the 1-day camp held in 1962 in the U.S. for those with intellectual disabilities, the first Special Olympics was held in 1968. Since then, it has been held every 4 years, taking turns between the Winter and Summer Olympics. The courageous challenge of those with intellectual disabilities will unfold in this year’s 10th Winter Olympic Games. Approximately 2,300 athletes and 1,000 officials from 120 countries will participate in seven sports — alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, speed skating, figure skating and floor hockey. Hoping that this Special Olympics will take our society one step closer to the beautiful community where those with and without disabilities can communicate with each other and live together, a commemorative stamp featuring both snowshoeing event where athletes walk on the snow and the logo of this Olympics is issued.
