The year 2010 marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and UAE. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1980, the two countries have promoted their friendship, cooperating in various areas such as the economic, cultural and social sectors. Recently, these exchanges have been further activated through the forging of a nuclear power plant construction contract between the two countries, as well as other cooperative projects. In celebration and commemoration of this 30th anniversary, Korea Post and the Emirates Post are issuing, through mutual efforts throughout the year, a set of joint stamps featuring the heating and cooling facilities of the two countries’ traditional houses that show the wisdom of their ancestors. Chimney of Mt. Amisan in Gyeongbokgung Palace, in Korea Korea’s traditional heating system called “on-dol” works through a fire in a furnace under the floor that heats the entire room. The heat that circulates under the room is funneled to the outside through a connected chimney. The Mt. Amisan chimney in Gyeongbokgung Palace was installed in 1865 at Gyotaejeon Hall, the living quarters of the queen. On the wall of the hexagon-shaped chimney, vines, crane, phoenix, pine tree, Japanese apricot flower, chrysanthemum and deer are arranged in a congruous way, making the chimney highly valuated not only in terms of the functionality of the chimney but also in terms of the aesthetics of the sculpture decorating the palace’s backyard. UAE’s Traditional Air-conditioning Tower UAE’s traditional air-conditioning tower called Barjeel is an example of traditional architecture that has been used to efficiently create natural ventilation in houses or buildings. The Barjeel has been used for centuries in the entire Arab region including the UAE. The tower that soars high above building gathers the wind blowing from all directions and channels the airstream to the inside of the building so it can be kept cool. Although the exact date of its origin is not known, many different forms of traditional cooling towers can be seen, even now, in many different countries.
