The year 2008 is a very meaningful year that marks the 100th anniversary of the Salvation Army’s entry into Korea. The Salvation Army was created in 1865 by William Booth, a Methodist pastor at a church in a London slum that preached and took care of the wounded and poor who were shunned by the rich churches at the time. The Salvation Army, which epitomizes “the army of God,” operates a variety of social welfare programs: it provides the general public shattered by poverty with not only spiritual services but also food, jobs and a place to rest. In Korea, the Salvation Army started in 1908, when the Salvation Army officer Robert Hoggard from England was appointed as the officer in charge of Korea. The Salvation Army Korea Territory started at what is now Pyeong-dong, Jongno-gu and achieved remarkable growth in a short period of time, establishing the bible university, a Salvation Army hospital, etc. However, during the Japanese colonial rule and the Korean War, numerous Salvation Army soldiers underwent bitter trials such as martyrdom, murders, etc. Amid the brutality of the war, the Salvation Army Korea Territory rose again to provide invaluable relief to refugees. In the 1970s, the first Korean commander in chief took office, who commenced indigenous missionary work fitting the unique circumstances of Korea. From the end of the 1980s, the Salvation Army Korea Territory has been repaying the assistance provided to Korea by starting overseas missionary work by Salvation Army soldiers from Korea all over the world. Currently, the Salvation Army Korea Territory is spreading the gospel and providing services to individual neighborhoods, through 620 or so mission centers across the country. Represented by the red charity pot symbolizing love, Salvation Army Korea Territory has earned the love of the Korean people. Celebrating its 100th anniversary, it is hoped that they will continue to conduct beautiful activities befitting their 100th anniversary slogan of “filling the land with God’s love.”
