Detail
Comprising the second installment of the Korean Film Series (2nd), four representative movies produced after Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule until the 1960s are introduced. Mother and a Guest (Sarangbang Sonnimgwa Eomeoni ) The novel 『Mother and a Guest (Sarang Sonnimgwa Eomeoni)』 written by Ju Yo-Seob was made into a movie in 1961 by Shin Film Co. Ltd. The synopsis of the movie goes as follows: Okhee’s mother, who lives with her mother-in-law and daughter after losing her husband, takes in a student boarder and is charmed with him. This is a movie where the excellent direction of director Shin Sang-Ok is well highlighted. The actors include Choi Eun-Hee, Jeon Young-Seon, Kim Jin-Kyu, etc. The Seashore Village (Gaenmaeul) This movie describes the lives of women whose husbands have perished on the seas while fishing. This movie is based on the original work of Oh Young-Soo’s novel with the same title “Gaenmaeul.” The movie is credited for taking Korean movies to a higher aesthetic level through its beautiful imagery that delicately captures the beauty of the natural setting. Produced by director Kim Soo-Yong in 1965, the movie featured actors Ko Eun-Ah, Shin Young-Kyun, Lee Min-Ja, etc. It was produced by Daeyang Film Co. Ltd. A Coachman (Mabu) The story of this movie involves a coachman who lives with his four children and makes his livelihood by drawing a horse. The coachman comes to relish a new hope when he gets tired of his hard life, as his son passes the Higher Civil Service Examination. The movie, on the back of the outstanding acting of Kim Seung-Ho, who plays the father’s role, received Silver Bear Extraordinary Jury Prize at the 11th Berlin Film Festival. The movie was directed by Kang Dae-Jin, and featured such actors as Kim Seung-Ho, Shin Young-Kyun, Hwang Jung-seun, etc. It was produced in 1961 by Hwaseong Film Co., Ltd The Wedding Day (Sijibganeun nal) Adapted from Oh Young-Jin’s drama 『Happy Event of Scholar Maeng』, this movie satirizes the entrenched stratification of society and old fashioned marriage system of that time. Hearing a rumor that the minister’s son is lame, scholar Maeng gives in marriage not his daughter but her maid. By receiving the Best Comedy at the 4th Asian Film Festival, this movie became the first Korean movie to receive an award in any overseas film festival. Directed by Lee Byung-il, this film has as its actors Jo Mi-Ryeong, Kim Seung-Ho, Choi Hyeon, etc. It was produced in 1956 by Donga Film Co. Ltd.
