` Sahmyook University commemorates the 100th anniversary of its establishment in 2006. Its history started in 1906, when the Seventh-day Adventist Church missionaries established the “Euimyeong School” at a site in Sunan, South Pyeongan Province, which is now occupied by Sunan Airport in Pyeongyang. The name Euimyeong signifies the “righteous sun” in the bible, or Jesus Christ, and indicates the ideals of Christian education. When the school was established toward the end of the Joseon Dynasty, the national prestige was on the wane. However, Sahmyook University strived, uplifted by its precepts of truth, love and service to soon become a beacon of Korean education throughout the long years of Korean suffering during the Japanese occupation, the tragedy of fratricidal war, modernization, industrialization, democratization and globalization. Closed in 1942 under Japanese suppression, Sahmyook University was reestablished in 1949 after Korea’s national liberation in 1945 at the very site it stands on now, which was then owned by the old imperial household. Sahmyook University has since continued to evolve, with its name changed in 1961 to Sahmyook Theological College, a 4-year college, and in 1967 to Sahmyook College, and in 1992 to Sahmyook University. With smoking and alcohol stringently prohibited across its campus, Sahmyook University has strived, through “education for the whole person,” to nurture excellent talent with sound morality and human nature, while instilling Sahmyook’s educational philosophy of “mind, spirit and body.” In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of Sahmyook University, a new stamp is being issued featuring the “Theology Building,” the representative building of Sahmyook University. It is expected that Sahmyook University, which announced its second founding after integrating last year with Sahmyook Euimyeong College, a college belonging to the same foundational juridical person, will achieve a quantum leap to develop into a “global elite hub university” that nurtures future social leaders.
