` The year 2005 marks the 60th anniversary of Korea`s liberation from Japanese colonial rule, as well as the centennial anniversary of the Eulsa Treaty, which was forced upon the nation by Japan in order to deprive Korea of diplomatic rights. On August 15, 1945, upon hearing over the radio Japan`s declaration of surrender, the Korean people, who had endured suffering and misery under 36 years of Japanese oppression, poured out into the streets and cheered aloud. Sixty years have since passed, and although we are marked with the scars of a divided nation, we have achieved democracy at the price of great sacrifice and hardship, and have achieved economic growth by demonstrating the vigor of the Korean people. Remembering that day when waves of Taegeukgi, the Korean flag, paraded in every corner of the nation, we look forward to the time the virtues of our people are recognized throughout the world. Introduced on these postage stamps are the accomplishments of our ancestors who have willingly given their lives for the liberation of the country, which are exemplified by the Korean Provincial Government building, the declaration of Korea`s independence, and the Korean independence fighter.`
