Detail
` By definition, ``fusion`` means dissolution, merger, and integration. Yet more commonly the word refers to a cultural phenomenon where two or more different cultural phenomon where two or more different cultural characteristics are converged in harmony. To modern people, characterized by resistance to fixed ideas and by pursuit of openness, individuality, diversity, change and novelty, fusion is established as a widely shared cultural aspect.
Although there is no known origin of this kind of fusion, it is indeed a phenomenon that is happening in a variety of sectors, including music, design, food, performance, and architecture. Fusion is tearing down the distinctions between East and West, tradition and modernity and between different genres.
In the 1960s, fusion jazz, the combination of jazz and rock was invented, followed by even more diverse fusion music as other musical genres, such as traditional music, were added to the mixture. The same applies for food. Fusion food was started in the US with its various ethnicities and nationalities, creating foods which harmonized Eastern and Western tastes, such as pasta with Asian sauces and pizza with Korean Bulgogi toppings. Fusion culture has penetrated our everyday lives, as people wear formal jackets with jeans, exhibitions are held on streets, and Eastern patterns are carved into Western style furniture.
It is with anticipation of a creative new fusion culture that ``Harmony of fork and chopstick,`` the winner of the Award for Excellence in the fusion culture section of the 2005 International Postage Stamp Design Contest, is being issued by Korea Post.`
