Detail
` In accordance with the periodic replacement plan of definitive postage stamps, a stamp depicting a Strix aluco, or Korean wood owl, will be issued on the September 1st of 2005, replacing the 50 won ``watercock`` stamp, in issue since February 19th 1998.
A distinctive feature of Korean wood owl is a round head, as it doesn`t have feathers on the top of its head that look like ears, unlike the common scops owl. The color of its body is grayish brown and it has a crooked yellow beak with green tints. The Korean wood owl, with an average length of 35cm, rests on tree branches during the days and gets active after sunset, when its highly sensitive eyesight and hearing abilities enable it to catch prey. A rare resident bird, it inhabits dense woods and is seen breeding in the Gwangneung woods in Namyangju-gun, Gyeonggi-do Province. It lays eggs in the holes of old trees and preys on insects, small birds, and wild rats. The Korean wood owl is a protected species, having been designated as Natural Monument No. 324.`
