`The Summer Universiade Daegu 2003, a sports festival for the youths of the world, will take place in Daegu, a city of time-honored traditions in education and culture as well as being a modern, trend-setting textile and fashion city, and other parts of North Gyeongsang province, from August 2001 to August 31, 2003. The Universiade, held for the first time in Turin, Italy in 1959, is staged every two years, divided into the Summer Universiade and the Winter Universiade. The purpose of this multi-sports gathering is to promote exchange among university students worldwide and to facilitate cooperation in achieving unity of global university sports. The Summer Universiade, held under the supervision of FISU (Federational Internationale du Sport Universitaire, International University Sports Federation) and Daegu Metropolitan Covernment, will welcome more than 11,000 youths form over 170 nations worldwide. They will challenge the limits of their physical prowess while competing in 13 events including athletics, volleyball, basketball, football, swimming, gymnastics, archery and Taekwondo. In addition, a delegation of more than 200 North Korean athletes and officials as well as a 310-strong cheering squad will participate in the Daegu Universiade, once again confirming the significance of sports as and indispensable arena for promoting inter-Korean exchanges. This international sporting event, held under the theme of 『Dream for Unity』, will promote the development of university sports as well as to serve as a festival seeking peace and harmony in the global village where the young people of the world mingle and forge dreams of a better future and beautiful friendships. The design of the stamp commemorating Summer Universiade Daegu, 2003, won the Grand Prize in the 2003 International Postage Stamp Design Contest, and expresses the 『Dream for Unity』.`
