Detail
`The 2002 FIFA World Cup TM, the first World Cup Finals to be held in Asia, came to a successful conclusion, leaving a new legacy of co-hosting between Korea and Japan. The tournament kicked off on May 31, 2002 at Seoul`s Sang-am World Cup Stadium with the participation of the largest number of countries in the history of World Cup Games. The 32 nations that advanced to the Finals played in group matches, the second round of 16, quarterfinals, and semifinals matches both in Korea and Japan. In the championship match held in Yokohama, Japan on June 30, 2002, Brazil emerged as the winner of the FIFA cup. The 2002 FIFA World Cup TM, full of many surprises, was particularly marked by Korea`s reaching the final four, and astounding feat that captured the attention of the people world over. Korea`s 23 national team platyers led by Dutch coach Guus Hiddink, scored 2 victories and one draw in the group matches and made it to the second round of 16 out of Group 1. Korea then defeated soccer powerhouses, Italy and Spain, to advance to the quarterfinals and semifinals. The all-out effort of the players paid off and demonstrated the possibility and hope of what Korea can achieve. The poignant scene of the people of Korea coming together as one, all wearing the now famous red tee shirts and shouting ``Dae-hanminguk` will forever be etched in the spirit and soul of all Koreans. The stamp, issued in commemoration of the successful hosting of the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan TM and Korea`s reaching the final four, features coach Guus Hiddink and the 23 national team players.`
