Detail
`The 14th Busan Asian Games, the first Asian Games of the 21th century, will be staged in Busan during 16 days from September 29 to October 14, 2002. Busan, one of the most beautiful port cities in the world, is the gateway to the Asia Pacific region. Some 10,000 athletes and officials from 44 Asian countries will compete in the Asian Games in 38 events including swimming, athletics, tennis, football, judo, hockey and archery. Bodybuilding will also be introduced for the first time as an official medal event. North Korea`s participation in the Games has been assured and the Sacred Flame will be ignited simultaneously at opposite ends of the Korean Peninsula, one on Jeju Island`s Mt. Halla in South Korea and the other on Baekdu Mountain in North Korea. The flames will then be united at Imjingak Park, located just south of the DMZ, to ignite the flame-holder in the Busan Asiad Main Stadium. The Busan Asian Games is anticipated to contribute significantly to the efforts towards reconciliation between the two Koreas in serving as a festival for all Asian people. Under the motto of `One Asia, Global Busan`, the Busan Asian Games aims to foster harmony among Asian countries with different ideologies and culture, promote friendship and exchanges of culture while cultivating a sentiment of cohesion among Asian countries through various festivals and exhibitions held during the Games. A commemorative stamp and a souvenir sheet featuring the beautiful city of Busan will be issued to memorialize the successful hosting of the 14th Busan Asian Games.`
