Detail
`In the second bundle of the Korean Orchid series, orchids including Cymbidium kanran Makino, Gastrodia elata Blume, Pogonia japonica Reichb. fil., and Cephalanthera falcata (Thunb.) Blume will be introduced.
Cymbidium kanran Makino
This perennial plant that grows on Jeju Island is 20 to 25 centimeters in height. From November to December, it produces 5 to 10 sprays of beautiful fragrant blooms that are greenish in hue. This fall-to-winter flowering species has been recently discovered in South Jeolla Province including Mt. Duryu and Mt. Mandeok in Gangjin. This orchid has been designated as Natural Monument No. 191.
Gastrodia elata Blume
This perennial plant grows deep in the mountains of Korea. Its scape is about one meter and normally does not sprout any leaves, although some do have scale-like leaves. The flowers, lemon yellow and yellowish brown in hue, bloom in June and July. The fruits, usually oval-shaped capsules, are produced in August and September. They grow naturally across the nation including Jeju island but the species are on the decline as they have been gathered without control for medicinal uses.
Pogonia japonica Reichb. fil.
This perennial plant growing in marshy areas across Korea has several thick fibrous roots. Its scape is about 20 centimeters and one long oval-shaped leaf is formed at the center of the scape. One blossom of reddish purple flower blooms at the end of the scape in May to July. The plants grow naturally across the nation including Jeju Island.
Cephalanthera falcata (Thunb.) Blume
This perennial plant grows in the shades in mountain forests or hilly areas and is between 40 to 70 centimeters in height. It sprouts three to ten long oval-shaped leaves. The flower forms a raceme of half-opened yellowish buds from April to June. It grows naturally in the southern part of Korea including Jeju Island.`
