`The year 2000 marks the centennial of Korea`s admission to the UPU.
The UPU was created on Octeber 9, 1874 with the goals of forming a single global postal territory for the reciprocal exchang of letter-post items, guaranteeing freedom of transit throuhout the entire world, and pursuing standardization in postal servies.In 1894 Korea moved toward joining the UPU and providing international postal delivery service by launching its modern postal service.Korea was admitted as a full-fledged member on January 1, 1900 follwing the completion of its application procedures for membership in the Universal Postal Congress held in Washington D.C. in 1897, Korea was elected to serve as a member of the Executive and Liaison Committee in the 20th Universal Postal Congrees held in Washington D.C. in 1989.
The nation was also honored by hosting the 21st UniversalPostal Congress in COEX, Seoul for 24
days from August 22 to September 14, 1994 andcarring out the chairmanship of the Council of Administration (CA) and the Postal Operations Council (POC) in the 22nd Universal Postal Congress held in Beijing, China in 1999.In that position, Korea will be able to enhance the prestige of its postal service in the world arena by playing an active role in the coordination and supervision of establishment of the main agenda for the following Congress.
In celebration of the historic centennial of Korea`s UPU membership, which also coincides with the new millennium, the Ministry of Information and Communication is issuing a new commemorative stamp featuring the UPU symbol mark and Korea`s postal history.`
