Detail
`The Ministry of Information and Communication annually issues a series of stamps featuring comic strips: one which played a pioneering role in flrmly establishing comics as a from of entertainment in Korea, and the other which was especially popular among children. The fourth stamp collection of the Korean cartoon series issued this year features the Challenger created by Park Ki-jong and Aktong-i (which literally translates to naughty boy) rendered by Lee Hi-jae. Park Ki-jong`s Challenger Challenger is the success story of a Koeran expatriate residing in the alien land of Japan. He experiences a great deal of hardship and frustration but finally rises out of his miserable situation. This comic was first published in 1964 and immediately enjoyed great popularity. Hoonie ekes out a meager living with his widowed Janpanese mother. He faces discrimination everywhere for being different. Even at school, he is constantly harassed and left out in the cold. He is even expelled from school after being framed up by other students. However, Hoonie gets a second chance and a whole new life when he takes up boxing as a career. Though life in the boxing ring proves extremely callenging, Hoonie overcomes trials and tribulations to come out on top in the fair world of the square ring free of discrimination and prejudice. Lee Hi-jae`s Aktong-i Do you remember Aktong-i, the pint-sized little rogue full of mischief with a couple of strands of hair on the back of his head? First created in 1983, Aktong-i is a consummate trouble-maker who has no rival in pulling practical joks true to his name. However, Aktong-i also possesses a heart of gold and is a defender of justice, standing up to bad kids who bully his weak friends. He weaves a funny story with his best friend Sun-gi, the very pretty girl Suk-i, the little bully Wangnam-i who always does bad things and ends up beiing grilled by Aktong-i, and the fat kid Daeshik. Aktong-i appeared in a comic magazine for children and quickly became a famillar fare and good buddy to children all over the country.`
