Detail
` On May 1, 1899, in the third year of King Kojong`s kwangmu(martial brilliance) reign, Kunsan established itself as a modern, international port, This year, Kunsan marks the 100th anniversary of its port`s opening. Due to its western location, Kunsan has had a natural connection to China since ancient times, and served as a conduit for transmitting Paekche culture to Ja Since its opening as a port city, Kunsan has become a hub of commercial sea trade, transporting rice produced from its inland regions, the granary of Korea. With a population of approximately 300,000 people, Kunsan is nestled on the shores of the picturesque Kumgang River, the gateway between the Yellow Sea and the Kogusan Arehipelago. Kunsan`s location and year-round attractions make it a natural tourist destination. A cherry-blossom festival is held each spring along the magnificent 40-km stretch of the Chonju-Kunsan thoroughfare. Summer is a chance to enjoy the scenic beaches surrounding Sonyu-do Island and among the Kogunsan Archipelago. Autumn features the popular Chinp`o Artistic Festival. And the Kumgang River estuary is a winter haven for migratory birds, offering one of the most spectacular sights of the season, birds landing gently on the water. To celebrate this centennial of Kunsan operating as an international port, many special events are planned this thriving center, including an academic seminar and a comprehensive art festival. A sand sculpture park will be constructed, as well as a memorial hall and a monument to commemorate the victory of Admiral Yi in the Chinp`o battle against the invading Japanese. Also in time for the centennial, the Ministry of Information and Communication is issuing a commemorative stamp. Kunsan is now poised to become the nerve center of the up-and-coming west coast area, slated for another international harbor and industrial complex. `
