The term ``Universiade`` is etiologically the compound of ``University`` and ``Olympic`` meaning the Olypic Games for collegians and university students. The Universiade is held every two years in cycles of summer and winter games under the sponsorship of the Federation Internationale du Sport Universiade(FISU), the world governing body of university sports with 109 member states. To be eligible for the Universiade, compettitors must be collegians, university students, or within two years after graduation from college or university (age limit :17 to 28 years of age). First held in Chamonix, France in 1960, the 18th winter Universiade will feature numerous events such as Alpine Skiing, Nordic Skiing (Cross Country, Jumping, and Nordic combined,), Figure Skating, Ice Hockey, Short-Track Indoor Speed Skating, Speed Skating, and the Biathlon, under the slogan of the Universiade- ``Bring Together the Youth of the World to Hold the World in Their Arms``. The Universiade will be an arena for collegians and university students from all over the world to contribute to world peace and love for humanity, while harmonizing their academic spirit with sportsmanship. The University Games will also provide Korea with a valuable opportunity to publicize its cultural heritage and antural attractions to people all aroun the world. Muju, the site for skiing events, is located at the foot of Mt, Tokusan where the Kumgang River and the Namdaechon Stream originate. and which is renowned for its ginseng, walnuts and various edible wild plants. Mt. Tokyusan National Park is located in the heart of the Sobaek Mountain range. Chonju, which will host ice sports events, is the provincial capital of chollabuk-do of the Mankyong River, surrounded by the Mankyong Plain to the northwest and by hills and mountains to the southeast. Known as the cradle of the Yi Dynasty of the Kingdom, Chonju is famous for Korea`s mulberry paper, `Hanji` which is used in making sliding doors, oiled floor paper, umbrellas, and hand-held fans, as well as sedge products. Chonju is also very proud of its culinary reputation. Chonju is the birthplace of Pibimpab (a large bowl of rice mixed with a combination of vegetables and minced meat). Hoping for the sucessful hosting of the Winter Universiade `97 Muju·Chonju with the entire nation, the Ministry of Information and Communication is issuing two commemorative stamps featuring the ``Three-T`acgeuk (the Great Absolute) design and a Dashing Skater``, which was awarded the top prize in an international contest for`96 stamp designs.`
