`The Ministry of Communications has been issuing a series of postage stamps with traditional Korean music as its theme. For its ninth release the Ministry introduces two music stamps featuring folk songs popularized by Korean peasant workers. ``O-Dol-Ddo-Gi`` is a popular folk song of Cheju Island, the legend has it that during the 16th century, Kim Bok-Soo, a fisherman was caught in a storm and drifted to Siam(present Vietnam). Later he married Im Chun-Hyang, a Korean lady who also washed up ashore after a storm, and settled down, Yet he could not forget his home land and found his way home. ``O-Dol-Ddo-Gi`` refers to Kim Bok-Soo. The melody has a quaint charm, characteristic of the beautiful southern island. The song later spread to Kyong-Ki Province and was called ``O-Dol-Dok``. It is interesting to note that song resembles a Chinese tribal dance music from Unnam Province called the Peacock Dance. Farmers sang ``Ong-He-Ya`` during barley threshing in the Kyong-Sang and Chung-Chong Provinces. The song has a 2/2 rhythm, which is rare in Korean folk songs to comliesent the farmers flailing movement. The simple, vibrant and jovial beat well represents the sentiment of the people. The Ministry of Communications presents music postage stamps of ``O-Dol-Ddo-Gi`` and ``Ong-He-Ya`` to revive our national heritage of the Korean music and the spirit of cooperation. The promotion of our heritage will further consolidate national harmony.`
