Detail
`The Independence Hall, built with the contributions from all walks of life, is a national shrine where data on the history of national crises and development of us, a nation that has overcome foreign invasions and maintained independence, are gathered, studied and shown on display in order to help the nation confirm a firm national spirit and form a clear view of the state. Proposals for building an Independence Hall were made soon after our country was liberated in 1945, but the confusing political situations both internal and external prevented them from being realized. However, shocked by Japan`s distortion, in its school books, of the history of its colonial rule of our country, our nation decided to build the Hall and started collecting contributions on August 28, 1982 to raise the funds required for the construction. The cornerstone was laid on August 15, 1983 and a broad campaign was started to gather the data on our independence scattered home and abroad. On August 4, 1986, however, when the construction was almost completed, a fire broke out in one of the structures and brought about a year`s postponement of the opening. Now that all the work including the repair work has been perfectly completed, the historic grand opening of the Hall is scheduled to be staged on August 15,1987. One of the two kinds of postage stamp being issued depicts an overall view of the Independence Hall and Monument to The Nation and the other The Statue of Indomitable Koreans and a National Flag. The Ministry of Communications issues the stamps in commemoration of the historic moment of the opening of the Independence Hall, a sanctuary that symbolizes our nation`s soul and spirit.`
