`The 16th Pacific Science Congress is held in Seoul for 11 days August 20 to 30, 1987. The Congress is to be participated in by about 3,000 Korean and foreign scientists from more than 80 countries, including Nobel laureates. They represent not only natural science but humanities and social science.
The Pacific Science Congress, held every four years and also known as the ``Academic Olympics``, is the most important of the object activities of the Pacific Science Association, which was organized in Hawaii in 1920 and has since grown to have 35 state members and 32 group members. Korea joined the Association as state member in 1957.
The 16th Seoul Congress, which has for its theme ``New Dimensions of Science, Manpower and Resources in the Pacific`` will discuss academic problems concerning the prosperity and welfare of the peoples on the Pacific region and also serve to strengthen amity among them.
The Ministry of Communications issues this postage stamp in commemoration of the holding of the 16th Pacific Science Congress in Seoul, believing it will successfully achieve its aims.`
