`October 1,1987 marks the 39th Armed Forces Day. Founded together with the government, on August 15,1948, the ROK armed forces have come a long way, achieving development after development, to be among the most formidable in the world today. Since the end of the Korean War, the most disastrous internecine war in our history, the ROK armed forces have continued to strengthen themselves, achieving self-reliant defense power for our independent national existence and eternal prosperity. As a result, our armed forces, watchful every second, day and night, on the ground, in the sky and on the sea, have built such defense capability as to destroy any military provocation in its starting stage and guarantee a successful holding of the 1988 Seoul Olympiad, paving the way to our creation of a prosperous and fully advanced fatherland in the 2000`s. On this occasion of the 39th anniversary of the ROK armed forces, the Ministry of Communications issues a commemorative postage stamp in order to raise the fighting morale of the soldiers and further strengthen the ties between the people and the military.`
