Detail
`The 24th Olympic Games are held in Seoul September 17 through October 2, 1988. The Olympaid, which traces back to the athletic festivals of Ancient Greece, makes it its ideal to bring forth a peaceful world. ``Harmony and progress`` has been adopted as the motto for Seoul Olympiad, which will be long remembered as a glorioul event in our history. In celebration of the event the Ministry of Communications will issue eight kinds of stamps each year from 1985 until 1988. The two following stamps are the fourth of the series. 1. Canoeing Canoeing traces back to the days when primitive people got aboard a flowing tree trunk and rowed it in the direction they wanted. But canoeing as a sport started in 1865, when an Englishman named John MacGregor cruised along the coastline of the European Continent and up the Nile by rowing a canoe made in the shape of the kayak used by the Eskimos of Greenland. It was adopted as an Olympic event at the 11th Olympic Games held in Berlin. There are two types of canoeing events-kayak and dian. 2. Cycling Cycling, which is a race on bicycles competing for speed, has various types of race, roughly divided into the track and the road. It has been a popular sport event among the many speed fanatics all over the world since 1868 when the first bicycle race was held in Paris, France. Cycling has been on the Olympic program since the first Olympic Games held in Athens in 1896.`
