Detail
`The 24th Olympic Games are held in Seoul, September 17 through October 2, 1988. The Seoul Olympics, with `harmony and progress` as its ideal, promises to be a grand world festival where a great variety of cultures will meet together in harmony in the cultural atmosphere of a five thousand year old country, and where the finest youths from all parts of the world will compete with one another in strength and skill in an environment of humane warmth of the host nation.
In celebration of the world event, the Ministry of Communications issued eight kinds of postage stamps in 1985 and will continue to issue as many kinds each year until 1988. The stamps will feature themes of the Seoul Olympic Games such as their emblem, mascot, 23 competition events, stadiums, etc.
The eight kinds issued in 1985 under this plan were designed by Kim Hyun, the artist whose design of the tigerhad been chosen for the mascot of the Seoul Olympics. The eight kinds planned for this year will feature horseback riding, fencing, gymnastics, soccer, and other themes, and will be designed by Prof. Cho Young-Je of Seoul National University.
In addition, the Ministry of Communications issues another four kinds of stamps for the special purpose of publicizing the Seoul Olympics throughout the world. The 370-won, 400-won, 440-won and 470-won denominations of the stamps(100-won to be added to each for the Olympic fund) have been set in accordance with the four airmail letter rates for the four different areas of the world. These stamps, available in small-size sheets consisting of four pieces, carry the same design as the 70-won stamps.`
