Detail
`Our forefathers, with their outstanding intellect and creative spirit, developed scientific civilization, leaving excellent achievements to us of today. This scientific spirit must be remembered and inherited by us so that we can futher develop our science and technology. For this purpose, the Ministry of Communications will issue a series of science postage stamps for the next years. Since this year happens to be a year in which Halley Commet is to appear over the earth 76 years after its last return, the theme of design for these first postage stamps of the series has been selected from the field of our astrometeorology. 1. Chomsong-dae, Meterorological Observatory(National Treasure No.31) This observatory, located in Kyongju, is constructed in the form of an open sylindrical dome, 9.17m in height, 4.93m in diameter at the base and 2.85m in diameter at the top. Believed to have been built during the region of Queen Sendeok of Shilla Dynasty (7th century). It is the oldest observatory in the Orient. It is recorded in our history that stars were watched from it throughout the 24 divisions of the year. On this postage stamp the observatory is shown together with man-made satellite, a symbol of the 20th century`s scientific technology. 2. Kwanchon-dae, Meterological Observatory(Treasure No. 851) This observatory, drawn on` the postage stamp together with Halley`s Comet, was built in the 14th year of King Sookjong of Chosun Dynasty (1688). The observatory, 3m in height, standing on a 289cm by 230cm area, is located within the Changkyong Palace compounds.`
