`Modern Korean Art, which began to have two currents, with the introduction at the turn of the century of western painting to the unique style of art with a long tradition, served as a means of resistance during the Japanese rule of our country and has since our indepenence grown to be an indispensable part of world art. The Ministry of Communications has for the past few years issued modern art postage stamps in series featuring selected paintings left by well-known modern Korean artists, and now issues for the fourth time the following four kinds of modern art postage stamps: 1. Valley of Peach Blossoms(1964, private possession) This is a painting by Pyen Kwan-Sik(1899-1976), who studied painting in Japan under Komuro Sun, a great master of southern painting of Japan. It is a landscape of a rural village with its peach trees in full blossom. Pyen painted it at the age of 65. 2. Rural landscape(1940, Hoam Atr Museum) This is landscape, painted by Lee Yong-Wu(1904-1952), give a rather rough impression, with the deep black color forming the strong outlines and the intervening blue color providing the atmoshere of the picture. 3. Male(1932, National Museum of Conteporary Art) This work, painted by Lee Ma-Dong during peak days of his artistic vigor, reveals his powerful touch and scale of art. 4. Woman with a Water Jar on Her Head(1944, Hoam Art Museum) This is one of the masterpieces of painting left by Yun Hyo-Chung(1917-1967). A country woman walking with a water jar on her head is depicted in a bold and exact manner.`
