Detail
`The 88 Olympic Expressway, extending 175.2㎞ between Taegu and Kwangju, has taken two years and nine months to be completed. Starting with the Kyoun-In Expressway that was built in 1968, we have rapidly increased the number of expressways until today, when we have a network of ten expressways that add up a total length of 1,423km.
The 88 Olympic Expressway, named so in commemoration of our hosting the `88 Olympic Games, is different from the other expressways in Korea in that it is paved with cement concrete. All the technical problems involved in paving with cement have successfully been solved. This has resulted in not only improving our technology of paving roads with cement, but also providing a new perspective for our cement industry.
The new Expressway will shorten the distance between the two regions of Honam and Yongnam, stimulating inter-regional exchanges, essential for mutual understanding between the inhabitants of the two regions. It is also expected to help develop tourist spots in between the regions.
The Ministry of Communications issues is postage stamp in order to commemorate the opening of the 88 Olympic Expressway, which will certainly help in harmonizing the nation and achieving balanced development of the country.`
