`July 1, 1984 marks the 20th anniversary of the Asia Pacific Boradcasting Union.
The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) was establighed as a professional association of broadcasting organizations in the region of Asia and the Pacific.
Its establishment was conceived during the fifth and final conference of the Asian Broadcaster`s Conference (ABC) held in Seoul in 1963, hosted by the Korean Broadcasting System. There the statutes of the ABU were adopted and it was decided that the Union should be formaily established on July 1, 1964.
The ABU was created with the objedtives of supporting the interests of broadcasting organizations with in the region, promoting the study of all broadcasting-related problems and exchanges of intormation, assisting in the development to broadcasting for the purpose of education and national devdlopment, and advancing international friendship and goodwill through the medium ofbroakcasting. At the creation of the Union, there were only 27 members, 17 of which held full membership and 10 assouciate membership , but today, 20 years afrer its creation, the Union has grown to have 68 member organizations.
The major activities of the ABU are: satellite coordination TV news exchange programme and information exchange cooperation in sports broadcasting, copyrights and legal matters, hosting progrmme prizen competitions technical cooperation through its Technical Centre, training for broadcasters in the region and publication of infomation developing relations with other international organizations etc.
The Ministry of Communications issues thispostage stamp in order to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Asia-Pacifid Broadcasting Union, and also to express the hope that cultural exchanges through broadcasting will contribute to common understanding among all its member nations.`
