Detail
`The fishes that ingabit the seas off the Korean coast have been studied by many scientists, home and abroad. Chung Yakjon, usually called ``Chasan`` for one, once wrote for the journal Chasan Eubo a research article on the ecology of the fishes inhabiting the sea off Heuksan Island. So far, 870 different fishes have been found in the Korean seas, rivers and ponds, but it is expected that more will be found.
The Ministry of Communications will continue for the next few year to issue postage stamps featuring fishes found in the Korean seas and inland waters in order to probide an opportunity for the general public to take an interest in, and have a correct understanding of, the fishes in and around Korea. The following two are the first of the series of stamps.
1. Gak-si-Bung-eo
This paricular kind of silver carp, found only in Korea, inhabits the Nakdong River and some other steams in the south of the country. Ponds and the mud under the banks of slow streams with a lot of water weeds along the sides make a good habitat for this fish. Its side is diamond- or egg-shaped. It is 35mm to 40mm long.
2. Dot-sac-chi
Found near the middle southern coast and Cheju Island of Korea, off Kyushu of Japan and around Taiwan, this fish is cobalt-blue, with a line of round specks on its sides. Its dorsal fin resembles a sail, and the fish of this species move around in a shoal with the sail-like dorsal fin showing above water. The fish is about 3,000mm long, weighing over 60kg. `
