Detail
`The 24th Olympic Games are held in Seoul September 17 through October 2, 1988. The Olympaid, which traces back to the athletic festival of Ancient Greece, makes it its ideal to bring forth a peaceful would. ``Harmony and progress`` has been adopted as the motto for the Seoul Olympiad, which will be long remembered as a glorious event in our history. In celebration of the event the Ministry of Communications will issue eight kinds of stamps each year from 1985 until 1988. The two following stamps are the second of the series. 1. Track and field Track and field, which is made up of track, field and road events, is the most basic of all sports because it comes from man`s most basic activities : running, jumping and throwing. The sport has developed and prospered ever since the First Olympic Games, held in Athens, in which it took its position as the most central sport of all. Track and field in Korea started in school athletic meets, the first of which was held on May 2, 1896. 2. Boat recing Boat racing, a water sport in which the participating teams of oarsmen compete for speed by rowing, is held in beautiful and healthful environment on a river, lake or the sea. Boat racing as a modern sport, which was first introduced to Korea in 1916, was started in the beginning of the 18th century by an English nobleman who kept a luxurious mansion house on the Thames. `
