Detail
`The year 1985 is the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations.
On June 26, 1945, when World War II was coming to a close, the representatives of 51 countries asembled in San Francisco signed the Charter United Nations, thereby establishing the United Nations on October 24 of the same year in order to maintain international peace and security, and thus to contribute to improving welfare of mankind. It has since grown to be an international organization with 159 member countries.
During the past forty years, the United Nations has exerted itself to develop friendly relations among nations and maintain international peace and security, promoting economic, social, cultural cooperation among nations through the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council and their specialized agencies.
Maintaining close relationship with the United Nations, the Republic of Korea, ever since its founding, has supported the charter, purposes and principles of the United Nations. In keeping with various activities of the United Nations being carried out under the slogan ``For a better world,`` the Korean government is also actively staging various activities designed to publicize the spirit of the United Nations to the general public.
The Ministry of Communications issues this postage stamp in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations, through which permanent world peace, we pray, will be achieved. `
